Madrid, Spain’s largest city and the seat of its government, is a popular tourist destination for visitors from all around the world Like most European capitals, Madrid has lots of things for the tourist to do and see; many interesting tourist sights, world-famous museums and galleries, some great restaurants, cafés and bars, and the city is also host to many of the country’s main music, cultural and business events.
Madrid is of course famous for its great nightlife and clubs, which can be found throughout the city’s districts, including the Bilbao, Tribunal, Alonso Martinez and Moncloa areas. Also the city’s main gay ‘ghetto’, Chueca, has become a popular hot spot for a mixed, hedonistic crowd whose main purpose is to enjoy themselves until the early hours of the morning. You should take note that things start late here! Especially on the weekends, when often restaurants are not open until 10.00 or 11.00pm.
To ensure that you get the most out of your stay, we recommend that you book, well in advance, your ideal accommodation from the large choice of Madrid hotels that are available. Location is often an important factor when selecting your hotel. One of the most central areas is Puerta del Sol, Gate of the Sun in English, which is also considered to be the centre (Km 0) of the city’s road network. At Puerta del Sol is also one of the city’s most famous plazas, where you will find several government buildings, a monument to King Charles III, the famous Tio Pepe sign, as well as the statue of the Bear and Madroño Tree, which is the symbol of Madrid.
There is a good selection of hotels by Puerta del Sol in Madrid and below you can find two recommendations
2 star equivalent Hostal Union lies about 600 metres from Puerta del Sol, right in the heart of the city. The hotel offers basic yet comfortable rooms at excellent rates, and is therefore very good value for money.
Hostal Castilla II is another affordable establishment that is located around the corner from Puerta del Sol, just north of the Gran Vía. All of the 16 guest rooms have a private bathroom and air conditioning. Also, in the direct area of this Madrid hotel, you will find a good selection of cafés, bars and restaurants.
